about

There are many similarities and differences between Cowboy music and Country and Western music. One of the most fascinating for me is that cowboys often sang from the saddle at night as they did their rounds, to calm the herd. That requires a certain type of song and a certain kind of singing, to keep edgy animals calm, particularly with a lightning storm on the horizon.

The Cowboy songs were often stories of loss and longing, and those are themes that I respond to emotionally. There’s a haunting sadness, even in the happy Cowboy tunes, that is recognisable as Cowboy, rather than Country.

I dig Country & Western music and I write it myself, but it’s the Cowboy songs and the Cowboy sound that call to my heart. I just felt that it was the right place to start, for my first solo album. With every new melody I could see someone in the saddle, riding toward a perfect sunset, or riding into town and hearing music coming from the saloon. I imagined a girl, with a guitar, riding from town to town and playing with the local piano, banjo, and fiddle players, earning some money, having fun with the musicians, and then moving on to the next town. These tunes follow her from town to town in the Old West, with a distinctive sound for every town.

I hope that people who like Country, Western and Cowboy music will also find something to like in these tunes, and that those who like Deep House music will find it a refreshing take on the deep sound we love.
